So I was re-watching “Hello, Dolly!” (1969) earlier and I’m surprised that I’m still a big fan of the film, no matter what age of my life. Is it because of Barbra Streisand and Michael Crawford are such class acts? Or is it the wonderful music (my favourite being “Put On Your Sunday Clothes)? Maybe it’s the lavish production design and costumes? Or probably how director Gene Kelly handled everything, really photographing ever small and beautiful detail? Who am I kidding!? It’s everything! For me, despite popular opinion, it’s a timeless classic. And I’m sure the Academy agreed being that they gave the film a Best Picture nomination back in the day. One of my favourite movies of all time, that’s for sure.
I’m thinking and choosing between two lists I want to make. It’s either a tribute to Barbra or a list of the most underrated musical gems of Hollywood? What do you think?
